Well over a hundred model portraits were combined to create a background montage of faces. That montage was then texture-mapped to a life preserves shape, which was then combined with a photo of a life ring to add the perimeter rope handles and a further feeling of reality. A rope was captured separately, shaped with Photoshop tools, and added in to the image. The background is of storm clouds shot on a road trip to Colorado.
