Garbage, The Ocean And Environmental Issues

An island of garbage rises up out of the ocean creating an island in a stock photo designed to bring attention to environmental issues, toxic waste, and threats to the health and well being of the ocean. We have all heard of the plastic island in the pacific ocean, and this image can provide a face to that concept adding impact and emotional connections to any accompanying messages. To facilitate the use of this ecologically oriented image I crafted it to work with any cropping format and to have a background that works well for copy space.

Creating Environmental Photos

To create this environmental photo I first photographed at a garbage dump then used Photoshop to composite the garbage imagery into a shot of an island I photographed in the Galapagos islands off the coast of Ecuador. I added clouds that were captured digitally on a road trip in Colorado. The final image is a 52 megabyte file distributed to stock photo agencies.

This is an image about change as well. The storm clouds can be seen as clearing or arriving and depending on the headlines and body copy can indicate better times approaching or trouble ahead. The fact that we can see the garbage and refuse spreading out further beneath the water, like an iceberg, gives credence to the idea that ecological problems are much greater than what we see.

I created this ocean garbage image not just for stock photo licensing, but also as a fine art print. This is just one image in a series of fine art imagery that is based around environmental concerns.
