This image of a lighthouse in a storm is one of guidance, navigation and security in a changing and often threatening world. Lighthouses are  iconic symbols of safety and navigational assistance. Put them in an ocean storm and you have an excellent photograph for illustrating concepts such as navigating perilous times, finding a safe route ahead, and security in dangerous situations. In this image a lighthouse keeper, dressed in yellow rain gear and wearing a knit hat, stands at the top of the lighthouse, in the glare of the beacon, and looks out to sea as he keeps watch over the rough waters. Huge waves crash around the structure as storm clouds roll in and two gulls glide above the breaking waves.

Storms are a metaphor for change and turmoil while the ocean and waves are primordial symbols of power and mystery. The lighthouse rises up to illustrate man's struggle with the challenge of nature and too, of his spiritual ascendance. The beacon speaks of truth and knowledge...enlightenment if you will. The keeper is a symbol of dedication and perseverance. Together the symbols combine to create a powerful and versatile symbolic photo that can add visual impact to a deceptively large range of concepts and communications.

The keeper stands alone in a testament to perseverance and dedication with the complimenting elements of solitude and contemplation.

Lighthouse Photos

Lighthouse photos resonate with all of us, particularly in stormy situations. This particular lighthouse is based on the Pigeon Point lighthouse in Northern California but is actually a composite picture using several lighthouse images as well as several ocean and sky shots. The clouds were actually photographed in Colorado on a road trip from New Mexico to California. I used Photoshop to composite the imagery together into a concept stock photo for licensing in advertising and editorial uses. I was careful to create an image that can easily be cropped to square, vertical or horizontal formats while retaining plenty of copy space for art directors and designers to utilize in layouts requiring headlines and body text.
