Old Saana

This high angle photograph of the Old City of Saana, Yemen is one of my favorite images from my recent trip there. I was on a photo-tour of Yemen and Socotra with Jeremy Woodhouse and Luka Esenko. From the high angle perspective the beauty of the city is quite evident as it is easy to see the geometric patterns that adorn the many tall structures. There are over 100 mosques in the Old City and they certainly add to the beauty and romance with their tall slender minarets rising up from the sea of buildings.

Ancient Walled City of Saana

The ancient city of Saana is surrounded by a clay and stone wall that rises up from thirty to forty-five feet in height. The city has been continuously inhabited for over 2,500 years and is said to have been founded by the son of Noah. The people of Saana are friendly and welcoming and actually seemed delighted to pose for our photographs with many of them asking us if they could pose for photos!

Vacations, Adventure And Safe Travel In Yemen

I found our trip to Yemen and Socotra to be a wonderful adventure. We saw remarkably few tourists and, especially on Socotra Island, the lack of tourist infrastructure added to the adventure and sense of authenticity of the trip. While we didn't take any undue risks, we certainly felt safe at all times. I believe that with a little bit of common sense travel in Yemen, and especially Socotra, is very safe.
