Dragon Blood Trees On Socotra

What completes this photo of a group of Dragon Blood trees on the island of Socotra is the eagle soaring above the canyon in the background. The image was shot in the early morning just after sunrise. The rays of the sun put a golden highlight on the turnks of the Drragon Blood trees. The drama of the scene is heightened by the combination of the warm sun, the unique Dragon trees, and the distant canyon with its steep rock walls. I photographed the scene with a Nikon 800 and a Nikor 24-120 zoom lens with an ISO of 800 and an f stop of 16.

Dragon Blood Sap

The sap of the Dragon Blood tree is a deep red in color. It is used for a wide variety of medicinal and cosmetic purposes, not to mention its use in dyes and varnishes including varnish for violins!  The Dragon Blood trees are threatened by the presence of the numerous goats that have been brought to the island of Socotra.
