Socotra Beach After Night Fall

I photographed this Socotra beach after night fall using an ISO of 2400, an f stop of 16, and a shutter speed of 24 seconds with a Nikoon D800 and a 24-120 zoom lens. I shot from a high rock ridge covered in a layer of sand. Behind me was a military facility. There were several of us shooting...Jeremy Woodhouse and Luka Esenko, the group leaders, Carol Munch and Larry Peterbridge.  Shortly after we began shoot, and after dark, a soldier toting an AK-47 arrived on the scene and told us we were not allowed to shoot there. After some discussion with Luka the guard said we could have fifteen minutes, and Carol promptly blurted out "No way!"  In the end we were there at least another 40 minutes. While the images are a bit grainy (noise), nonetheless they have a very cool quality about them.

Qalansyah, Socotra

This beach was at Qalansyah, Socotra off the coast of Yemen. A beautiful and almost deserted white sand beach which we were able to photograph several times under different lighting conditions. This night image can be used for various concepts including solitude, tranquility and getting away from it all. Seeing the night sky filled with stars gives the image a sense of exploration and discovery.

Socotra, Vacations And Adventure Travel

Socotra is an excellent destination for vacations and adventure travel. The lodgings are a bit on the rustic side, and camping out is part of the allure. The terrain is exteremly rugged requiring a good deal of hiking and necessitating four wheel drive vehicles. It all adds up to a teriffic experience and should not be missed by any hardcore travel photographer!
