Symbology and Metaphor In Business Portraits

There is much symbology and metaphor in business portraiture. In this photograph of an African American business woman, the background of glass and metal immediately speaks of success in the corporate world. Further, the fact that the woman is in an office of glass says that either she has few limits, or perhaps, she is still subject to the notorious "glass ceiling". Behind the glass is a staircase which can further accentuate either of the previous two interpretations. That staircase can be the stairway to success that is either open and waiting for her, or, because it is on the far side of the glass wall, is not open to her indicating a limited future. The headline or body copy is what will guide the direction of the symbols and the message inherent in this visual communication.
