The advantages include scalability, automatic upgrading, lower capital requirements, and decreased IT costs. This can range from simple word processing to Google Maps, to distributed computing networks. Cloud computing is a difficult concept to illustrate with a single photograph and thus the value and importance of this stock photo. With this picture we have created an image that conveys cloud computing quickly and with a single glance. Adding to the value of this photo is its unusual visual nature which is sure to make viewers look more closely...and read the accompanying text. That is, after all, the purpose of a stock photograph. This versatile stock image can also illustrate computer related concepts such as the way forward, the future, progress, and order from chaos.

The Value Of A Cloud Computing Photograph

Adding to the value of this photo showing cloud computing, is the degree of difficulty in creating the image. It took me two days of Photoshop work to create the clouds in the form of ones and zeros, and position them in the diminishing perspective. It is challenging to create forms out of clouds and place them in differing skies, or different portions of a sky. Skies are one continuous gradation in density and color, so moving a cloud from one part of the sky to another requires a great deal of fine-tuning of color and density, or luminosity and hue, in Photoshop vernacular. For raw materials I used approximately twelve different photos of clouds in addition to the background cloud image. All of the clouds were photographed in Santa Fe, New Mexico, while I was teaching a Stock Photography and Photoshop workshop.

The uses of a picture of cloud computing are many and quite diverse. This image can be used to illustrate editorial content about progressive communications and business application developments not only about cloud computing, but also Internet issues and almost any kind of future computing advances. Pie-in-the-sky is another term that comes to mind when examining the potential uses for this stock photo. The photograph is also flexible in its layout. It can be cropped effectively as a vertical, square or horizontal image making it equally useful for magazine covers, rack brochures, double-page spreads, bus stop shelters or billboards. Another interesting compositional aspect of this image is the fact that the data is coming forward over a background of clouds...indicating order is coming from out of chaos. The skies are clearing and the future, the way forward, is being revealed. On top of everything else, this photo makes an excellent background image.
