Who Knew The Visual Impact Of A Slow Motion Video Featuring Water Drops Exploding In Hot Oil?

My partner, Stephanie Roeser, and i didn't really know what to expect when we sprinkled a few drops of water into a frying pan of hot oil in front of our Phantom HD High Speed (slow motion) video camera. It started off slowly but quickly began to build in intensity. The water drops exploded in a burst of steam which produced more water drops which then exploded which produced...well, you get the idea! It is fascinating, even mesmerizing, to watch the process. It could almost be the fourth of July fireworks, or explosions on some foreign battlefield. Whatever the metaphor, it is certainly fun to watch!

Capturing Stock Video Clips Of Water In Hot Oil At 1000 Frames Per Second With The Phantom Hd Video Camera

Shooting at 1000 frames per second requires a lot of light. We used four 2000 watt tungsten lamps in a custom built softbox to light the pan and oil. Even then we had to shoot wide open with the resulting shallow depth of field. But the important thing is that the video works. Using the Phantom camera was made easy by GVS System's Software/Hardware solution. Capturing the video was easier than using my Prosumer video camera! Seeing this video really brings home to me the danger of trying to put out a grease fire with water! Ouch!

Uses Of A Stock Video Of Water Drops Exploding In A Frying Pan Of Hot Oil

I can see this image being used in a variety of ways by the food industry. The first thing that comes to mind is for intros, transitions and credits for "foodie" programs, of which there are plenty! Safety films also come to mind and, of course, there are always science programs. The food industry is in constant need for material to use in everything from public television to corporate videos, to infomercials. This captivating super slow motion almost abstract video can be an excellent resource for such productions.
