Elephants, Risk And Decisions

Elephant Photo

In one of the more unusual elephant photos a huge pachyderm has paused at a stone archway connecting two cliffs, and is considering the advisability of crossing the questionable structure. In the background is a glowing yellow-orange sunset. The elephant is peering down at the disconcerting bridgeway. Will it hold his weight? Is it worth the risk to cross over to the other side? Will the bridge buckle and collapse under the weight of the elephant?

This image of an elephant trying to decide whether to risk crossing a fragile stone bridge is a metaphor for all decision making be it persona or business in nature. The image is graphic and simple getting its message across quickly whether run as a billboard or seen thumbnail size on the Internet. The image can easily be cropped as a vertical magazine cover or a horizontal double page spread. There is plentiful copy space for headlines, mastheads and text. The elephant can represent both large and small businesses as well as the Republican party if used in a political context.

Creating Concept Elephant Photos

To create this concept elephant photo I photographed an elephant in Thailand. The cliffs were created from photos of the coast along San Francisco in Northern California. The sky was photographed in Mexico near CanCun. I used Photoshop to composite the elements together. Elephants make great concept images because of how we tend to anthropomorphize them. We attribute qualities of nobility, intelligence and human emotions to the great creatures. Obviously that also reflect attributes of strength, power and size. In this particular image the great weight of an elephant is critical to adding tension to the image as it brings in to question the durabilty and integrity of the bridge. This addtionally is an image about the way forward, connection, and progress.
