Cavalry Troops of Genghis Khan Engage in Battle in this Re-enactment of an ancient Mongolian skirmish to honor the father of Mongolia

While traveling in Mongolia I happened upon this incredible re-creation of a Mongol battle with the troops of Genghis Khan, festival held to honor the great Mongolian emperor and founder of Mongolia. The fighting was incredibly realistic with 500 mounted soldiers brandishing swords, spears, lances and bows and arrows. As the armies merged in battle the hooves of the horses kicked up the dust until the whole incredible scene began to disappear in a brown cloud.

Mongolian Mustangs and Equestrian Prowess

There was considerable display of horsemanship on the field. Mounted soldiers on Mustangs at full gallop would reach down and pluck objects such as weapons from the ground. I think just about every man, woman and child in Mongolia is an expert at riding horses. We saw more horses on our journey than vehicles. A big part of the festivals are horse races and showmanship. Wrestling was big as well...and these guys looked plenty tough! In Mongolia there are more than three million horses...more horses than people!. In Mongolia the horse forage for their own feed. Fermented Mare's milk, Airag, is the national beverage. The horses of Mongolia are stocky with short legs and large heads. They are cherished in Mongolian culture and horse racing is one of the most popular events in the land. It was the Mongolian horse that in large part enabled Genghis Khan and his heirs to conquer so much of the world. The great emperor himself once said "It is easy to conquer the world from the back of a horse!". When boys turn three it is traditional to give them a horse.

Genghis Khan, Wives, Body Guards and Women Wrestlers

Genghis Khan is reported to have had 500 wives and 10,000 body guards. Kind of makes the modern day rappers look pretty tame! Remarkably, in his time there were women wrestlers as well. Genghis Khan conquered more land and people than any other man in history, and did it with a relatively small army of no more than 100,000 men at any time. In 25 years his conquests were greater than what the Romans achieved in 400 years! His descendants held titles including Khan, king, sultan, emperor, Shah, Emir, and Dali Lama! Even today the borders of Korea and India remain essentially the same as they were created by the Mongol rulers.
