Pictures of Money Flying Through a Cloudy Sky on Feathered Wings

This image is of hundred dollar bills flying through the dark sky on feathered wings. In this photo the money is soaring through the clouds. This is the first stock photo I ever made using Photoshop. I did it back in 1990 and it took me about two days. Back then, to rotate a thirty megabyte file in Photoshop took 45 minutes, and you couldn't see the new position until the time was up and the screen refreshed! I did the work on a Macintosh II with a whopping 32 megs of Ram. Ouch! The biggest drive I had was 250 megabytes, and that was considered very large! You couldn't even buy a gigabyte drive for a Mac back then,I bought one for a Digital Systems computer and paid $5,000.00 for it. This image of flying money was used on the cover of Time magazine and can represent both income and expense, money in or money out.

I had spent several days photographing Egrets for, of all things, a housing brochure. I had a pre-press company scan the 35mm Ektachrome slide to a 50 megabyte file. Back then that was a huge file. I photographed the currency for this image and had the same company scan the money photograph and the shot of the sky. I laboriously selected the dollar and the wings using the lasso tool. Photoshop didn't yet have clipping paths! Photoshop was also without layer masks, history and a lot of other tools we now take for granted. Once-in-a-while I would accidentally hit command "S" (save) instead of command "z" (undo). I couldn't stop the save process, so I would unplug the computer! I usually had plenty of time to make the decision though because saving was painfully slow. Making Fedex shipments was always dicey because of the slowness of computing, the slowness of saving, and the frequency that something would go wrong while saving to the Syquest disk (remember those?).

A year or so ago this image appeared on the cover of TIME magazine. It took sixteen years from the time I made the image until it appeared on TIME magazine! I guess that says something for the image though; even after all this time it still sells.
